Every year thousands of children start their academic journeys without having had an eye exam. We know that approximately 1 in 4 children have some type of eye condition, with many of them struggling through school with an undiagnosed ocular problem.
We are proud to once again participate in the Eye See…Eye Learn program. This program, funded in part by the province of Ontario, provides complimentary eye exams for children entering junior kindergarten. If necessary, a pair of eyeglasses (donated by Nikon Lenswear, OGI, and Summerhill Optometry) will be provided to your child at no charge.
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that children have their first eye exam before they are 18 months old.
The importance of eye health during a child’s formative years can’t be overstated. That’s why the Province of Ontario provides annual eye exam coverage for children.
The prevalence of digital devices (like smartphones and tablets), combined with a more indoor lifestyle, seems to be increasing the rate of eye problems among our youth.
Today, approximately 25% of children in school require some type of corrective lens in order to have ideal vision.
If your child needs glasses, they will love our selection of stylish frames. Choose from some of the world’s leading eyewear brands – like Easyclip Kids – and enjoy sensible style that won’t break the bank!
It sounds like the answer – “no!” – would be obvious, but you would be surprised. Children are highly adaptive; many times they simply learn to live with something, not realizing that what they are experiencing isn’t normal.
An eye exam is an objective way to determine the health of your child’s eyes. If there are any concerns, we will inform you of our findings and let you know of the appropriate next steps.
Most vision problems that we do find can be treated and rectified, especially when the child is young.
While we recommend that everyone have their eyes examined annually, children are of particular need for annual exams. As a child grows their bodies – and eyes – change rapidly. Staying on top of these changes is important, as having proper eyesight is a contributing factor in the educational success of your child.
Like an adult eye exam, a child’s eye exam is relatively short (under an hour) and completely painless. We will educate your child about their eyes and proper eye care, taking the time to answer their questions and to let them interact with us. We love teaching children about their eyes!
